Mál og menning
1990

A young man moves with a rickety suitcase and a typewriter into an old cottage in a small village. Soon strange events begin to happen, he has strange dreams, sees sea monsters and is repeatedly thought to be a ghost, regressive, or even related to old ghosts. Svefnhjólið itself is a motorcycle that he travels around the area on, but sometimes he travels without it, because he has a tendency to fall asleep in one place and wake up in another. It turns out that not everything is what it seems.

Mál og menning

1991

Bréfbátarigningin is one of Gyrðir Elíasson's first prose works, it was published in 1988 and was nominated for the Nordic Council's Literature Award two years later. There are four stories in the work and they form a narrative curve where the atmosphere is wrapped in a romantic veil of childhood visions and nostalgia; it is everyday and sometimes comical but at the same time dreamy, strange and sometimes scary.

The book contains 37 short stories - a selection from Gyrðir's first five short story collections. Ever since Bréfbátarigningin was published in 1988, Gyrðir has nurtured the difficult form of the short story and enriched it with his special way of telling and refined style. This book reflects very well the development of Gyrðir's short stories and is therefore ideal for those who want to get to know his work better.
